Acadians in New Orleans April 30, 1765

Permission to use image of the original document granted by Warren Perrin

There is a transcription of names in the document that I received but three of the name transcriptions are incorrect so I have removed the transcribed names from the margin.

Pierre "Légère" is really Pierre Lagrève, Jean-Baptiste "Bourgeois" is really another Bergeron, Jean "Lemère" was Jean Semer. This information was provided by Stephen A. White and I was able to confirm his findings when magnifying the document in Adobe PhotoShop.

By 1765, two hundred and thirty-one Acadians had made their way to New Orleans. This is a list of those who had Canadian Card Money that they wanted to exchange for Spanish money. According to René Babineau, this is the only list available prior to the Attakapas and Donaldsonville Censuses of 1766 that can be compared to the Acadia Census of 1671 for name comparisons.

René Babineau found this document in the Archives in France that revealed the names of these 231 Acadians who were in New Orleans on 30 April 1765. He donated a copy of it to the Museum in Erath, Louisiana.

Catherine Quessy [Caissie], widow Bergeron, age 30.
Also found in the 1766 Cabanocey census is:
Jean-Baptiste Bergeron age 44 Marguerite Bernard, his wife, age 36
Jean-Baptiste was still alive on October 27, 1786 but died before November 7, 1811.

A further note, the listed Acadians were not in New Orleans on April 30, 1765, but had arrived in Attakapas before April 23, 1765. The list is undated, but probably was prepared about April 5, 1765. The list is mentioned in a letter from Aubrey and Foucault to Choiseul-Stainville dated April 30, 1765 (Quest for the promised Land p. 43-44). It also states : "We were able to convince them to settle in the districts of Opelousas and Attakapas and they have departed".
